Reverve Energy is very pleased to announce new sponsorship, Seal Rescue Ireland

They are a registered charity dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick, injured, or orphaned seals. Climate change leads to more challenging conditions for young seals and they can become injured or separated from their mothers. The charity operates a 24-Hour Rescue Line, supported by just over 600 Rescue Network Volunteers who help to assess, and transport seals to our care, covering a whopping 3100 km of coastline.

Reverve Energy was moved by the energy, dedication and professionalism of the volunteers at Seal Rescue Ireland in their very practical work to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and support an iconic, ‘at risk’ species on Ireland’s shores.

Ireland’s native seal populations are keystone species, vital to the Irish marine ecosystem. They are also a bio-indicator species. The wild seal populations helps us to identify wider environmental issues that we can then work to address. Seals have no0 natural predators in Irish waters and so are ranked as apex predators, along with whales and dolphins.

Where seals are under threat, this comes from humans and climate change. Our warming planet makes storms more frequent and more violent. These storms can injure seals or separate pups from their parents at a critical time in their development. Over-fishing can reduce the seal’s food source and trawler nets can tangle seals and harm or drown them.

Ireland has 2 species of seal, the Grey and Common seal. They are known as True Seals because they lack an external ear and just have an opening on either side of the head. True seals are also slow and cumbersome on land, whereas eared seals have a rotating pelvis which enables them to “walk” more easily on land, similar to the walrus.
